(BTW- I owned PT HD, and sold it last year.but, were I tracking and mixing in project or pro facility, I would prefer to use it for those tasks in a heartbeat for home use, the expense is simply unjustifiable IMO, unless the income justifies it's cost for composing? I think a more valid question is: as new generations are borne into working with native systems based upon uber-power multi-core/cpu technologies, and thus spend more early/learning time on these types of systems, what is the potential EOL for stand-alones (RADAR, Alesis HD24, etc)? Hybrids (PT HD, Pyramix, etc)? Without the existing foothold, would PT HD have even found a place in today's recording world were it introduced as a new product at the 2006 NAMM? Look at how PARIS failed, and it was considered by many to have stellar sound qualities, and even after EOL, it still exists in project studios, and maybe even a few pro installations. The manufacturer may have installed the maximum RAM or the RAM slots may be inaccessible. PT HD actually rides a fine line between native computer based DAW and a stand-alone such as RADAR, thus it is more understandbale/reasonable to compare the two. Sorry, there are no Memory upgrades available for this model.
But, the comparison of a native DAW to RADAR is not brought up very much, since the differences are obvious, and could be said to be drastic. This is the same processor that debuted in the last generation of Mac Pros, but running at a. RADAR is very expensive as well, but has less editing features, lack of virtual instrument support, etc. The entry-level 2499 Mac Pro has a single quad-core 2.8GHz Xeon Nehalem processor. Pro Tools HD vs Logic, or any other native solution, is like comparing apple pie to chocolate ice cream, as both are desserts, but different ones.
